It’s 9:00PM. You’ve put the kids to sleep and are finally melting into your bed when you realize you haven’t eaten today. This doesn’t just happen to me, right? It’s a good day when I’ve had at least one meal, with the occasional scraps that my son doesn’t eat or tries to throw on the floor. Parenthood is the most rewarding and exhausting job on the planet. We are constantly worrying about our little human’s needs, and putting them before our own. Often times we overlook the fact that to be able to take care of them properly, we need to take care of ourselves properly. That includes fueling our bodies with all of the good nutrients that it needs. I’m sharing a few of my favorite healthy snacking tips for busy moms today! (Dads, you can use these too!)
I’ve always been a snacker. I come from a family of snackers. Salty snacks are my weakness, but when I get a hankering for something sweet, I have to have it.
This year, I’ve made a commitment to myself and to my family. We are going to eat healthier. We are going to be healthier. My hope is that my son, and any other children I might have, will see us making wise eating choices and grow up having a healthy relationship with food. He’s already making us look bad with his love for kale, coconut water, and snap peas.
I’ve compiled some of my favorite healthy snacking “hacks”, and hope that you will find them as helpful as I do!
1. Don’t wait too long between eating.
They say that one of the biggest causes of overeating is undereating. Get in a snack between each meal to keep blood sugar and energy levels from dropping too low. That will cause you to overindulge later. Keep snacks all around your house, so that no matter where you are or what you have going on, you have something to eat nearby.
2. Don’t let yourself become dehydrated.
Staying hydrated throughout the day will prevent you from having phantom hunger pangs, and thinking that you need to eat when you really don’t. Being dehydrated can cause overeating. Make sure you’re getting plenty of water throughout the day!
Pro Tip: Buy a cute water bottle or jug to motivate yourself.
3. Check Nutrition Labels in the store before you buy.
This one is a given. Check the labels before you even bring anything home from the store. If you don’t have it in the house, you can’t eat it. Simple! I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to put on pants and drag the kids out of the house so I can run to the store to grab potato chips and cookies.
4. Have a Sweet Tooth? Indulge–with FRUIT!
One of my favorite ways to indulge my sweet tooth is with fruit. There is no artificial sugar, plus you’re getting a head start on your daily fruit servings! (According to the American Heart Association, you should be consuming 4-5).
One of our favorite ways to snack on fruit is with Outshine Snacks. Grayson loves them, and I’m comfortable and confident giving them to him. Their fruit bars are made with real fruit or fruit juice, a great source of Vitamin C, and completely free of any GMO ingredients. Their yogurt bars are made with 100% real yogurt, and packed with protein.
Sometimes, we like to get fancy and dress up our Outshine Snacks.
For these, I used the Pineapple and Grape flavors, but they’re all so delicious.
Your eyes aren’t deceiving you here. I squeezed some lime juice on top of this Pineapple fruit bar and generously sprinkled my favorite chile seasoning on top. It’s perfect! Try this with the Mango and Watermelon fruit bars as well!
This one. This one will satisfy any sweet tooth. Grab your favorite flavor, we used the Grape fruit bar, drizzle a little melted chocolate, and top with fruit! You can get so creative with this one! Use dark, milk, or white chocolate. Pair with your favorite fruit, nuts, or granola for that crunch. (This works with the Simply Yogurt bars as well!)
We had so much fun creating these delicious treats using Outshine Snacks. Healthy snacking doesn’t have to be hard! If I can do it, so can you!
